Sanahin

Monastery Sanahin is located in village Sanahin near town Alaverdi of Lori province. It was famous religious, cultural and scientific center of Gugharkh state of Tashir region (X-XIII). The complex had big role in Armenian cultural and religious life. The Sanahin Monastery was invaded many times. The part of building was burnt and monuments were stolen by Persians. It also suffered from the natural disasters, especially from the earthquake in 1139. The name Sanahin gets literally translated from Armenian as "This one is older than that one", presumably representing a claim of having an older monastery than the neighbouring Haghpat Monastery.

The Sanain complex consists of three churches, matenadaran (repository of monuscripts), chapel, religious school, library and cemetery. The oldest church is the St. Mary founded in the X century. The Sanahin is famous not only for its Monastery but also for Mikoyan brothers. Artem Mikoyan was famous aircraft designer. In partnership with Gurevich he designed many of the famous MiG military aircraft. In 2001 Sanahin was included into the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
