Fortress Khertvisi is one of the oldest castles and military structures of medieval Georgia. It is located in the southern part of Georgia in Javakhk region. The fortress was built in 985. Khertvisi is situated on a high rocky hill in a narrow gorge at the confluence of the rivers Kura and Parvana. In the X-XI centuries it was center of the Javakheti province. In the XII century it became a city and then, in the XIII century, it was destroyed by Mongols.
